Highway Code for Children

Children need extra care on the road. These simple rules help you stay safe every day.

  • Stop at the edge of the sidewalk.
  • Look left, right, then left again.
  • Listen for traffic.
  • Think before you step out.
  • Use a crosswalk (zebra crossing) if there is one.

Walking Safely

  • Walk on the sidewalk.
  • If there is no sidewalk, walk on the right-hand side facing traffic.
  • Hold hands with an adult near busy roads.
  • Wear bright clothes in the day and clothes that shine in the dark at night.

Riding Bicycles

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Ride on the left side of the road in single file.
  • Follow traffic lights and road signs just like cars.
  • At night, use lights and reflectors.

As a Passenger

  • Children under 5 years must sit in a child car seat in the back seat.
  • Everyone must wear a seat belt.
  • Keep your hands, arms, and head inside the vehicle.
